Kitchen Social sits in UTC, Sarasota’s University Town Center, serving an American menu built around variety and a mix of indoor and outdoor seating that plays well to the Florida setting.
Kathryn and I went on a Saturday evening in August, around 7:15. We’d tried to get a reservation earlier that day and were told the place was fully booked, but we decided to try anyway. It was busy, and we were informed it would be about a 25-minute wait, which felt reasonable enough. Within two minutes, seats opened up at the bar, and we took them instead.
The bar seats turned out to be one of the best parts of the night, comfortable enough that they felt more like a couch than bar stools, and that same level of care showed up everywhere else in the restaurant.
Tasting Notes
Food
We started with the crispy Thai shrimp, and it was excellent. The breading was light enough to stay out of the way, and the accompanying garnishes complemented the shrimp rather than competing with it.
The short rib tacos were the standout of the night. The beef was rich and heavily flavorful, seasoned well and balanced by a veggie mix that kept the richness in check. It easily could have been too much, but the balance was exactly right. The chips and salsa were good, but not nearly as good as the tacos. They also could have given me more salsa, as I felt like I had more chips than salsa.
Kathryn’s Thai Chicken Bowl was also good, but it didn’t quite match the other two dishes. The chicken itself was great, but the noodles were a little soggy, not bad, just short of the standard the rest of the meal had already set.
Between the three dishes and what they cost, this is hard to beat for the area.
Service
Service here was genuinely good, the staff quick, friendly, and clearly working as a team all night. What kept it from scoring higher is a ceiling rather than a complaint: nothing about it rose to the kind of exceptional, anticipatory service you’d get at a higher-end restaurant, even though nothing about it fell short either.
Atmosphere
The mix of indoor and outdoor seating is exactly what a Florida restaurant should offer, and the interior design holds up its end just as well. My only wish is that the space itself were a little bigger, since more room would let the atmosphere feel more intimate rather than as lively as it does on a busy Saturday night.
Rate It Score
Kitchen Social landed an 8.9 on Rate It. The food and the value are what make this place stand out, a menu with real range priced well enough that even the merely-good drinks feel like a win. What holds it back traces to the same idea in two different places: service that’s genuinely good without ever becoming exceptional, and a space that’s lively but not quite intimate given its size. None of that changes the outcome. This is a favorite, and we’ll be back.
