Sara Bay Country Club is a private, Donald Ross-designed course in Sarasota, Florida, and it wears its age well. The course was founded in 1926, making this year its centennial year. Every green carries Ross’s signature turtle-back design, and that one detail ends up defining the whole round: an otherwise open, approachable course that turns into a real puzzle the moment you’re standing over a putt.

Course Layout

Off the tee, Sara Bay isn’t a demanding course. It’s open, and a lot of the routing leans straightaway rather than working the ball around doglegs. The greens are where all the difficulty lives. Turtle-back surfaces punish anything slightly off-line, and there were more than a few putts that left me genuinely puzzled. A few more doglegs would break up the round nicely, and the course surroundings could use a bit more polish, but neither gets in the way of what makes this course worth playing.

Maintenance

Conditioning is where Sara Bay separates itself. The course is in fantastic shape from tee to green, with tight, well-kept lies in the fairways and right up against the putting surfaces. Every lie was exactly what a course this well cared for should offer.

Value

I got onto Sara Bay through summer reciprocal access, since the club is private, and the guest fee itself felt reasonable given the caliber of the course I was playing. Sara Bay also stays open to reciprocal play through more of the summer than a lot of clubs at this level, which is a real point in its favor. Plenty of private courses shut outside guests out entirely once the season turns, and this one doesn’t.

Rate It Score

Sara Bay landed an 88 on Rate It. The turtle-back greens are the defining challenge here, distinctive enough on their own to carry the round, and the conditioning matched that standard everywhere else on the course. What kept the score from climbing higher traces back to the layout itself, mostly straightaway with fewer doglegs than I’d have liked, along with surroundings that could use some polish. Even with that, this is a course worth returning to, and I’ll definitely be playing it again.
